Another pic from my recent holiday to Scotland… A view of ‘The Isle’ (as it’s known locally) on the Dumfries & Galloway coast.
The walled area on the left, jutting out into the harbour is called the Captain’s Garden, now with several houses on it, but originally a garden associated with the nearby castle. The black squares painted on the wall aren’t (as I originally thought) some kind of navigation markings but are in fact, simulated man o’ war gun ports!
Pen Hill, Yorkshire Dales, November 2004
Nikon D100, Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4 AF-D, 1/250s, f8, ISO 200
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Fifteen years ago it was the landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales…
For a number of years we rented a cottage in the beautiful market town of Leyburn for a week in November… relaxation, long walks and lots of local beer tended to be the order of the day, with a little photography thrown in.
Pen Hill is roughly five miles south west of Leyburn and at 1,814ft high it is a prominent landmark in the area.

‘Dog is my Copilot’
Nikon FE2, Nikkor 35mm f/2 AI-S, 1/60s, f5.6, Ilford FP4 Plus rated at ISO 100
The ‘Dog is my Copilot’ lettering inside what is obviously a pet carrier attached to this BMW F800GS made me chuckle…
‘Look Rover, this is the ninth tree you’ve made me stop at today!’
