A view of Montrose (road) Bridge seen from beneath the South Esk Rail Viaduct in October 2022.

The pretty uninspiring road bridge opened to traffic in 2004 and replaced a much more visually interesting structure dating from 1930. The 1430ft long South Esk Rail Viaduct was built by the North British Railway (NBR) in 1881 and carries a single-track section of the Edinburgh-Aberdeen main line.

Aqueduct Cottage has featured on this blog at least once before, here, coincidentally taken using another tiny point & shoot camera, the Canon Sure Shot Sleek.

The cottage has been extensively restored in the intervening four years and to my eyes is less appealing to photograph but the team behind the restoration has some interesting plans for Peter Nightingale’s cottage.
