I’ve mentioned before one of the ‘perks’ of working in the photographic retail trade being the occasional loan of equipment that I wouldn’t otherwise get to use…

20 years ago (almost to the day) I borrowed a Fuji GSW 690 III for a weekend, shooting a mixture of black & white and out of date slide film.

The above image, of All Saints Church in Ashover, Derbyshire, was taken during a stroll around the village after shutting up the shop for the day. The EBC Fujinon SW 65mm f/5.6 lens gives a wider view than the GW 690’s 90mm that I’ve got used to in the last 18 months (and finally bought from the chap who kindly loaned it to me… thanks James!) and the notes I made at the time show that I was hand-holding the camera at shutter speeds down to 1/30 second!

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

10 years ago it was The Canalhouse, a pub occupying the lower floors of the former canal museum in Nottingham. I believe it’s the only canalside pub in Britain where the canal itself (The Beeston Canal) actually enters the building!

Fellows Morton & Clayton Ltd was, for much of the early 20th century, the largest and best-known canal transportation company in England. They went into liquidation in 1948 but the name lives on in a smaller pub next door to The Canalhouse.

Another image taken with my thingyfy Pinhole Pro S ‘lens’.

An image from last year’s Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. This is Crich Stand, a memorial tower dedicated to the memory of the soldiers from the Sherwood Foresters Regiment who died in World War I and World War II*.

In the current situation I’m not sure I’ll get chance to shoot any pinhole images on WPPD (which is today) this year…

*The memorial is also dedicated to those who died serving in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment from 1945 to 1970, the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment from 1970 to 2007 and the Mercian Regiment since 2007.

In the current situation I’m struggling to motivate myself where photography is concerned but I’ve decided to post images here that evoke happy memories, if they have any artistic or technical merit too then that’s a bonus!

This miniature ‘folly’ is only a few inches across and adorns the wall that separates a holiday cottage from the sea in the Scottish village of Lower Largo.

We had glorious weather the week we stayed there in October 2018 and enjoyed a few al fresco breakfasts even though the cold waters of the Firth of Forth were only a few yards away.

I’ve no idea who ‘E. Parker’ was, or what they did, but I love the building they left behind!

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Four years ago it was the city of Derby…

I was trying out the Fujinon XF 27mm f2.8 lens for the first time, I didn’t get on with it… Optically the lens was flawless, I just didn’t care for the lack of an aperture ring, something I was used to with my other X-series lenses.

I’m not quite sure what was going on with my camera settings that day… ‘1/3500s, f2.8, ISO 800’ What was I thinking?

A contrast between old and new in Sheffield, photographed in June. In the foreground is part of the Royal Exchange Buildings, a brown glazed brick structure dating from 1900 and designed by John Henry Bryars. The modern building in the background is the 52-metre, 16 floor iQuarter apartment building on Blonk Street, built on the site of the former Hancock and Lant furniture company premises.
