This former British Railways (BR) 16-ton mineral wagon is on display at the Prestongrange Museum in East Lothian.

Prestongrange Museum was originally founded as the National Mining Museum Scotland (now sited at Newtongrange in Midlothian) but is now dedicated to the area’s other once significant but vanished industries – salt boiling, chemical synthesis, soap making, glass making, potteries, industrial ceramics and bricks. It’s well worth a visit!

Throwback Thursday… Sutton Scarsdale Hall

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

15 years ago it was the faded grandeur of Sutton Scarsdale Hall near Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

Dating from the 1720s the Grade 1 Listed structure has been derelict since the 1920s and was initially preserved in 1946 by Sir Osbert Sitwell of nearby Renishaw Hall but is now in the care of English Heritage.

Last time I visited the hall, the interior was closed to visitors but I understand it has now reopened.

Sludge Tank – Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day

Today is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day and I’ve been out snapping with my Ondu 6×6 Pocket Pinhole camera and Fujifilm X-mount fit thingyfy Pinhole Pro S ‘lens’ mounted on my Fujifilm X-E4.

Apparently this rather decrepit railway wagon (photographed at the Midland Railway-Butterley) is a ‘sludge tank’ built in 1913 and once used by the National Coal Board.

Dalmally Hall has featured here before and if it’s still standing the next time I’m in the area it no doubt will do so again!
