Monochrome Monday… Sarah Ann

Nikkormat FT2, NIKKOR-S.C 50mm f/1.4, 1/125, f5.6 – Kodak Tri-X rated at ISO 200
Developed in Adox Rodinal at 1:25, 7 mins at 20°c.

Another image from a roll that’s been sitting in a camera for months!

As an afterthought the last thing I packed for my trip to the Isle of Whithorn in October 2019 was an untested Nikkormat FT2 loaded with a roll of Kodak Tri-X (rated at ISO 200 by mistake).

When it came to (finally) developing the film I thought ‘in for a penny, in for a pound’ and decided to use Adox Rodinal, a developer I’d never used before (a couple of people have expressed surprise at that fact!)

I’ve not shot much Tri-X so making comparisons is difficult but at first look I’m rather pleased with how this roll has turned out, with just the right amount of contrast and pleasant grain. It’ll be interesting to see how the roll of Tri-X (rated at ISO 400 this time) I’ve just finished compares…

Monochrome Monday… Experimenting with bellows…

Yashica FX-D Quartz, Yashica ML 50mm f/1.9, f16; – Kentmere Pan 400
Developed in Ilford DDX at 1:4, 11½ mins at 20°c.

I’ve recently been experimenting macro photography using a set of bellows between a Yashica FX-D Quartz and a standard 50mm lens… it’s not the easiest setup to use, if getting the camera in the right place is difficult then keeping it still is nigh on impossible!

This cotton bobbin is roughly 25mm in diameter and only a slight crop has been applied to the image. The bellows were set to give 40mm of extension which gives (according to my calculations) a magnification of 1.1x, slightly larger than life-size.

More experimentation and practice is definitely needed…

Olympus OM-2 SPOT/PROGRAM, Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f/1.8, 1/200s, f11 – Rollei RPX 400 rated at ISO 320
Developed in Ilford DDX at 1:4, 10 mins at 20°c.

I’m still experimenting with Hamish Gill’s pixl-latr and the excellent Negative Lab Pro Lightroom plugin for digitising my negatives and the more I use this combination, the more I like it!

I’ve never done much tweaking of my film images in Lightroom before posting them… it just doesn’t seem ‘right’ to do so somehow, but at the moment I’m hardly doing anything at all! Negative Lab Pro handles the negative/positive conversion beautifully and I find myself just making slight adjustments to contrast before I’m happy with the image… Maybe I’m just easy to please?

I spent part of yesterday experimenting with a new way (to me) of digitising 35mm film… My first impressions of Hamish Gill’s pixl-latr device are very favourable indeed, I’m definitely getting sharper images than from my Epson Perfection 4870 Photo scanner and I’m getting them much faster too!

I’ll post some pics of the setup I’ve been using just as soon as I’ve made my office presentable! 😁
