Monochrome Monday… The Forth Bridge

The iconic Forth Bridge photographed from North Queensferry a few weeks ago. The rail wheels on the shore provide interesting (if somewhat worrying) foreground interest.

On this particular day I photographed the bridge from both North and South Queensferry and I really do think that I could photograph it month in and month out and never become bored with it…

As winter approaches I’m already looking forward to hot days, picnicking somewhere quiet with views across the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. From this particular spot near Wirksworth, The Wrekin, the Long Mynd and Clee Hill (in Shropshire) can all be seen on a clear day.

The striking looking building in the centre of this image is Sheffield’s Charles Street Car Park, more commonly known as the ‘Cheese Grater’.

Designed by architects Allies and Morrison and opened in 2008, the ten storey structure contains 520 parking spaces and was voted ‘third coolest car park in the world’ in a 2013 competition.

A shot from last year’s trip to Scotland… this four-plank wagon awaits its turn in the restoration queue at the Fife Heritage Railway. Not much is known about the wagon’s history but it was donated by Tullis Russell whose paper mill at nearby Markinch closed in 2015 with the loss of more than 350 jobs.

Monochrome Monday… Assorted junk

A shot from my first roll of Rollei RPX 100, the second roll of film through a charity shop find Olympus OM20 (thanks Rachel!)

A couple of weeks back a visit was paid to the holt in Sheffield to view the winning entries of this year’s Photo Marathon and this was tucked away in a dark corner of the creative space there…

I’m rather taken with this film, it seems very forgiving, with a wide exposure latitude… I really must try the ISO 400 version.

Monochrome Monday… Sheringham Lifeboat Museum

The Sheringham Lifeboat Museum, seen here on a glorious September afternoon. The museum houses the Henry Ramey Upcher, the second private lifeboat (replacing the Augusta) to be stationed in Sheringham. Launched on 4 September 1894 she stayed on station for 41 years until she was slowly retired from duty and by 1935 the RNLI Liverpool-class vessel J C Madge had replaced her on rescue work.

Heritage railways are full of interesting items to photograph: the trains themselves, the architecture, the people (staff and visitors alike) and the myriad small details that make up a scene of days gone by…

This bicycle was sitting under the platform canopy at Sheringham station on the North Norfolk Railway during my visit there a few weeks ago and I couldn’t resist a snap whilst waiting for my train.

Monochrome Monday… Lower Largo, Fife (again!)

Not long now until I’m off to this wonderful place again… Lower Largo on the Fife coast. Which cameras to take this time?

The viaduct in the background once carried the Fife Coast Railway that ran from Thornton Junction in the west to St Andrews in the north. The line closed to passengers in September 1965 and completely in December 1966.
