An image from a recent ‘Photography Friday’ jaunt with my regular partner-in-crime, Rachel to Derby Arboretum, Britain’s first public park.

Joseph Strutt commissioned and donated the park for the benefit of citizens of Derby in 1840. The intention was a botanical tree garden for instruction as well as leisure. Sadly it was neglected for many years and even now is a little known and somewhat unappreciated spot in the city…

This 13 arch structure dates from 1875 and carries the Robin Hood Line high above the Nottinghamshire town of Mansfield.

It took me a while to remember where this pic was taken and even now I’m not 100% certain!

The area known locally as Pennytown has now mostly been swallowed up by the Derbyshire village of Somercotes and surrounding industrial estates but the ponds remain as a Local Nature Reserve.
