What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Ten years ago it was a footbridge over Burbage Brook in Yarncliffe Wood in the Peak District, in an area better known as Padley Gorge.

I’ve not been up there in a while, it’s a beautiful spot but incredibly difficult to get to yourself!

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

14 years ago it was a walk across the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle-Carlisle railway line.

The Grade II* listed structure had been closed for a couple of weeks for maintenance and the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line organised a number of walks for the final day of closure.

The walks set off north across the viaduct from Ribblehead Station with the return being via the area known as ‘Batty Green’ where 2,300 men and their families were housed in temporary camps during the viaduct’s construction.

The viaduct was designed by the Midland Railway’s chief engineer, John Sydney Crossley, and took five years to build, finally opening on 3 August 1875. At 440 yards (400m) long and 35 yards (32m) high, the 24 arch structure is awe inspiring and although no further walks across it are planned I’d definitely recommend taking a trip across it by train!

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

14 years ago it was the Narrow Gauge Weekend at the Golden Valley Light Railway in Derbyshire.

If memory serves there were five steam locomotives at work on the 2ft (610mm) gauge line, the oldest being IRISH MAIL, a ‘Quarry Hunslet’ 0-4-0ST built in 1903 (and partially visible in the above image) and the newest was…

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Three years ago it was North Lane near Belper in Derbyshire, part of an ancient route known as ‘The Portway’ that was used by the Romans to transport lead from mines in north Derbyshire to the fort at Derventio Coritanorum (now the Little Chester area of Derby).

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Six years ago it was London during a day out riding the rails with Dad. From memory we were only in London for an hour and a half between trains but I had time for a brief wander out of Euston station and down to West End Cameras then located on Tottenham Court Road.

I couldn’t resist photographing the BT Tower, reflected in the University College Hospitals Education Centre, especially when a London bus sneaked into shot!

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Two years ago it was the picturesque Fife village of St Monans. Yes, I did photograph the ‘zig-zag pier’ but I also photographed the Kirk (Church) which dates from 1369 and is widely regarded to be the closest to the sea in the whole of Scotland!

If memory serves a Formatt-Hitech Firecrest 10-stop neutral density (ND) filter was used to give the 45 second exposure time and a 2-stop hard edge ND graduated filter was also used to reduce the brightness of the sky.

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Six years ago I was travelling from Liskeard to Exeter by train and couldn’t resist poking the lens of my Fujifilm X20 out of an open window to capture the Royal Albert Bridge.

The bridge spans the River Tamar and also the border between Cornwall and Devon. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, construction commenced in 1854 with the bridge opening on 2 May 1859.

For the rail enthusiasts amongst you the train was ‘The Royal Duchy’, the 14.00 First Great Western service from Penzance to London Paddington, powered by High Speed Train power cars 43151 and 43195.
