Chesterfield’s famous Crooked Spire, photographed during the town’s 1940s market a couple of weeks ago.

I wasn’t sure how this roll would turn out… the camera, a Seagull twin-lens reflex, had been playing up during the previous roll.

Monochrome Monday… Shopper Shadow

I’m still struggling to find any motivation for photography at the moment and that’s translating into a lack of posts here… But I have exposed a couple of rolls of film this past couple of weeks and I’m hoping to start on my developing backlog tomorrow.

In this post I mentioned how looking at old(er) images can be interesting from a point of view of seeing what’s changed locally and the above image is an example of that.

This alleyway linked two of the main shopping streets in town and although it’s still accessible from the other end, this end is now home to a carpet shop!

Monochrome Monday… The Angel, Ripley

I’ve not had much enthusiasm for photography this past couple of weeks, other than feeling a little under the weather I’m not sure why but I’m sure the feeling is something everyone with a hobby can relate to at some point…

But in a burst of enthusiasm I’ve spent the last hour digitising some negatives from 2015 that had previously ‘slipped the net’ and although I’ve found nothing spectacular it’s interesting to see what’s changed hereabouts in just nine years.

The Angel pub opened in 2004, converted from a building that had at one time been ‘The Jubilee Club’ dating from 1897. It was never a pub that registered on my boozy radar (although my step-mum regularly met friends there for coffee) and it closed down on 8 April last year.

Allegedly, the Angel statue (visible above the entrance on the right) and a number of the pub’s fittings were purchased from the set of the Carlton Television soap opera ‘Crossroads’ (a revival of the ATV/Central Independent Television series that ran from 1964-1988) the final episode of which aired in 2003.

Throwback Thursday… Class 20s at the Midland Railway-Butterley

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Nine years ago it was a mini diesel gala (featuring just class 20s if memory serves) at the Midland Railway-Butterley.

I think this was the final train of the day with 20205 and 20189 hauling a heavily loaded rake of carriages across the causeway spanning Butterley Reservoir.

I’m definitely looking forward to warm, bright days, I’m fed up with damp and dreary…
