This week has seen a reshuffle of camera equipment enabling the acquisition of a Fujifilm 100-400mm f4.5~5.6 R LM OIS WR lens. Like a lot of people I’ve taken more of an interest in wildlife this past year and this lens, longer than any other in my collection by quite a margin, gets me so much closer to my subjects.

More practice is definitely required, even with optical image stabilisation (OIS) avoiding camera shake is difficult with a lens this long.

A digital image that somehow ‘slipped the net’ for you today… captured during a ‘Photography Friday’ outing to Monsal Dale with Rachel back in July this year.

Torrential rain in the Peak District in summer isn’t at all unusual and we were thoroughly soggy by the time we’d packed up our tripods and made our way back to the car.

I didn’t make any notes at the time but I seem to remember using both a polarising filter and a three-stop neutral density filter for this shot.

An image from this day last year, a day spent (as was the whole week) on the beautiful Isle of Whithorn in Dumfries & Galloway.

This pic was submitted to, and published in, The Scotsman that very week (although the subtle colours got a bit lost on newsprint!)
