What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

11 years ago it was a festive Nottingham city centre.

Unusually for me every image that day was captured with a 35mm lens… an AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D.

These pics (and in fact most of my pics that day) were taken at Leicester North station while the locomotives were running round their respective trains.

Throwback Thursday… Peak Rail (again)

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Ten years ago it was it was this Hunslet class WD ‘Austerity’ 0-6-0ST steam locomotive at Rowsley South station at Peak Rail.

I’ve just realised this post is almost identical to this one from January 12 2023… same railway, different loco!

Throwback Thursday… Steam at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

Nikon D600, Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G at 120mm, 1/200s, f7.1, ISO 640

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Ten years ago it was this British Railways standard class 4MT 2-6-4T steam locomotive at Keighley station on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

The tight curve and steep gradient out of Keighley station always makes locomotives work hard and there are a number of spots from which interesting and dramatic images can be captured.

Throwback Thursday… Darley Dale station (Peak Rail)

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Ten years ago it was this Hunslet class WD ‘Austerity’ 0-6-0ST steam locomotive at Darley Dale station at Peak Rail.

Peak Rail was one of the few heritage railways that ran trains in January and February but sadly they haven’t done so for a few years now… I’ll definitely be paying another visit when they do start running in March though!

Throwback Thursday… Norfolk coast

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Eight years ago it was the Norfolk coastline…

Happisburgh lighthouse must be one of the most photographed structures in Norfolk and I certainly couldn’t resist pointing my camera at it…

For the pillbox fans out there the above structure is a type FW3/26, dating from 1940/early 1941.

Throwback Thursday… SIR KEITH PARK… at Keighley

Nikon D600, AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR at 48mm, 1/125s, f8, ISO 2000

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Five years ago it was a steam gala at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (K&WVR).

Southern Railway (SR) Battle of Britain class 4-6-2 34053 SIR KEITH PARK was visiting from the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) but managed to wreak havoc with the day’s timetable thanks to defective sanding gear (something vital for the constant climb up to Oxenhope) and a leaking piston valve.

Built by the Southern Railway at Brighton Works in 1947 as 21C153 (designer Oliver Bulleid employed an idiosyncratic numbering system for his locomotives) and named after Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Rodney Park, GCB, KBE, MC & Bar, DFC, the First World War flying ace and Second World War Royal Air Force commander, the locomotive saw only 18 years service before being withdrawn in October 1965 but luckily preservation would beckon and 34053’s restoration was eventually completed in 2012.

Single frame… A Happy Christmas to all*

In this year of scaled down festive celebrations I thought it appropriate to wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or Cool Yule with, not three kings from the east, but one king from the west! 😁

In this case it’s Great Western Railway (GWR) 6000 class 4-6-0 6023 KING EDWARD II during its visit to the Great Central Railway‘s winter steam gala in January 2013.

* ‘and to all, a good night…’
