What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Five years ago it was the picturesque Yorkshire town of Skipton and its canals.

The first section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal opened between Bingley and Skipton in 1773 and is still a busy waterway today (albeit with pleasure boats). The Thanet Canal (pictured above) was a privately financed branch built to serve Lord Thanet’s limestone quarries near Skipton Castle and is usually home to narrowboats taking a break from the arduous journey across the Pennines.

I mainly use NIKKOR lenses with my Nikon cameras but the above image was taken using a Kiron 28mm f/2 lens that I picked up from a brocante (flea market) in France a month or so earlier… for the amazing sum of €0.50!

It has been said (mostly by my wife) that ‘Andy doesn’t do picturesque’ but I’m firmly of the opinion that scenes like this ARE picturesque in their own way.

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

14 years ago it was a walk across the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle-Carlisle railway line.

The Grade II* listed structure had been closed for a couple of weeks for maintenance and the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line organised a number of walks for the final day of closure.

The walks set off north across the viaduct from Ribblehead Station with the return being via the area known as ‘Batty Green’ where 2,300 men and their families were housed in temporary camps during the viaduct’s construction.

The viaduct was designed by the Midland Railway’s chief engineer, John Sydney Crossley, and took five years to build, finally opening on 3 August 1875. At 440 yards (400m) long and 35 yards (32m) high, the 24 arch structure is awe inspiring and although no further walks across it are planned I’d definitely recommend taking a trip across it by train!

The sheet these images are from is one of a very small number with any details attached and by coincidence they date from a visit to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden 23 years ago today!

The iconic Tees Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough, framed by the remains of the Cleveland Salt Works on Vulcan Street in September 2017.

This fantastic structure has featured here before and no doubt will do so again…

A couple of years ago I posted some images taken on a borrowed Minolta Autocord… a camera I’d completely forgotten ever using but some more negatives have recently turned up from it!

Jervaulx Abbey is somewhere I will return to (once we’re allowed to travel again), it’s a beautiful, tranquil place in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.
