Single frame… ‘ART’
‘ART’, Sheffield, June 2019
Nikon FE2, Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI-S – 1/250s, f8, – Kodak Portra 400 rated at ISO 200
This beautiful carved lettering adorns the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield and it caught my eye during a wander around the city in June this year.
The gallery occupies the third floor of The Central Library which was opened in July 1934, dedicated to ‘the service of knowledge and art’.
Built with the support of John George Graves, an entrepreneur who made his fortune out of one of the country’s earliest mail order businesses (which became part of Great Universal after his death in 1945), the gallery is the main home of Sheffield’s visual art collection and hosts significant touring shows.
As the lettering is a few feet above my eye level I used what is rapidly becoming my favourite Nikon lens, the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI-S… a wonderfully sharp, short telephoto that balances perfectly on my Nikon FE2 and FA bodies.

Olympus OM-2 Spot/Program, F-Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f/1.8 – 1/125s, f8 – Ilford HP5 Plus rated at ISO 640
A fantastic ‘ghost’ sign, spotted in Belper, Derbyshire in January this year… Although now a kitchen and bathroom showroom I do vaguely remember this building being a butcher’s shop.
Another image from the first roll of film through my Olympus OM-2 Spot/Program.

Another wonderful old business premises in central France, photographed between beer breaks at pavement cafés during a wander around Cosne-sur-Loire in August last year. This ‘Locksmith Security’ specialist had long since moved on…
I really could spend hours just wandering around and photographing things like this.

St Mary’s Bridge, Derby
Nikon FE2, Nikkor 105mm f2.5 AI-S – 1/250s, f8, – Ilford Delta 400 Professional rated at ISO 800
A pigeon perches on St Mary’s Bridge (over the River Derwent) in Derby in April 2019. The Grade II* listed structure was built between 1788-1793 by Thomas Harrison and replaced a medieval bridge that was demolished in 1789 as it was ‘too narrow and hazardous to wheeled traffic’.
Another shot from the recent test roll put through my resealed Nikon FE2.

Something from the archives today…
Another shot on a film that I really should shoot again, Ilford SFX 200.
Southwell Minster is a striking building, easily dominating the small Nottinghamshire town of Southwell and in spite of only being 25 miles from my home I haven’t been back since 1997! Time to place a film order with Analogue Wonderland and plan a day out I think!

Crich Memorial Tower, April 2019
Fujifilm X-T10, thingyfy 11mm Pinhole Pro S, 0.7s, f79, ISO 200
Another image taken with my thingyfy Pinhole Pro S ‘lens’.
Last Sunday would have been my late father-in-law’s 99th birthday so Joy and I took some flowers up to Crich Stand, a memorial tower dedicated to the memory of the soldiers from the Sherwood Foresters Regiment who died in World War I and World War II* (Joy’s Dad lived to a ripe old age but spent World War II serving in North Africa and Italy with the regiment).
I thought I’d sneak a few minutes capturing a couple of images for Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day while I was there…
*The memorial is also dedicated to those who died serving in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment from 1945 to 1970, the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment from 1970 to 2007 and the Mercian Regiment since 2007.
