Heritage railways are full of interesting items to photograph: the trains themselves, the architecture, the people (staff and visitors alike) and the myriad small details that make up a scene of days gone by…

This bicycle was sitting under the platform canopy at Sheringham station on the North Norfolk Railway during my visit there a few weeks ago and I couldn’t resist a snap whilst waiting for my train.

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Six years ago it was the City War Memorial, Nottingham.

Designed by T. Wallis Gordon, City Engineer and Surveyor, the memorial was unveiled on 11 November 1927 to commemorate the ‘Men of Nottingham who gave their lives for their King and Country in the Great War. 1914 – 1918’.

The memorial was later adapted to commemorate those lost in the Second World War.

The Latin inscription ‘Vivit Post Funera Virtus’ is the motto of the City of Nottingham and means ‘Virtue Outlives Death’.

A few months ago I picked up my first half-frame camera in the shape of an Olympus PEN EE-2. It’s a gorgeous little beast, simple, elegant and tiny.

The above shot is from the first roll I put through it, an incredibly out of date roll of Kodak 400 colour negative film that’s been lurking in my fridge for ages.

The image quality offered by the small 18x24mm negative and fixed focus lens are certainly not helped by dull conditions and very out of date film but I’m quite pleased with the results even so…

Not long now until I’m off to this wonderful place again… Lower Largo on the Fife coast. Which cameras to take this time?

The viaduct in the background once carried the Fife Coast Railway that ran from Thornton Junction in the west to St Andrews in the north. The line closed to passengers in September 1965 and completely in December 1966.

Another shot taken with a charity shop find Tamron Adaptall-2 35-70mm f/3.5 lens mounted on my Nikon FE2. A steamboat chuffs its way along the Trent & Mersey Canal at Shardlow during a recent(ish) ‘Photography Friday’ jaunt.

The Tees Transporter Bridge links Middlesbrough on the south bank of the river Tees to Port Clarence on the north and is the longest transporter bridge in the world with a span (between the towers) of 590ft.

Built by Sir William Arrol & Co. of Glasgow between 1910 and 1911 the bridge replaced a ferry service and the travelling ‘gondola’, suspended from the bridge, can carry 200 people or nine cars across the river in just 90 seconds!

The Sound Tower is part of The Structures on the Edge (SOTE) project, a fascinating series of installations on the Lincolnshire coast.

Designed by R Cannon and M Springett, London, the tower is ‘a device that focuses people’s senses and amplifies the windy nature of the site.’

I’ve no idea what the pipes in the foreground are for…

It’s so easy to lose track of time when ‘researching’ something on the internet… In this case it’s the ageing Aveling-Barford roller seen above.

I mean, I don’t ‘need’ to know which model it is or when it was built to post an image of it here but I’ve still lost over an hour today browsing various websites for information and can still only hazard a guess that it’s a model A2 that dates from the 1930s…
