Some more ‘gongoozling’ on a recent Photography Friday outing, this time at Fradley Junction, where the Trent & Mersey and Coventry Canals meet…

It was also warm enough for the first outdoor pub lunch of the year (and a couple of pints of Everards Tiger) at The Swan.

A couple of hours between trains in London recently gave me the opportunity to explore St Pancras Basin on the Regent’s Canal. It’s an interesting location, one worth further visits (in better weather!)

The dull weather actually suited my purposes with this image though… the drab sky and grey catenary powering the Channel Tunnel Rail Link contrast rather nicely with the colourful boats and brickwork surrounding the basin.

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Four years ago I was wandering around Langley Mill basin on the Erewash Canal and this barge rudder caught my eye.

I believe the ‘S and L Ltd’ refers to the firm of Stewarts & Lloyds Ltd who owned and operated a fleet of canal boats until the 1970s.

Another shot taken with a charity shop find Tamron Adaptall-2 35-70mm f/3.5 lens mounted on my Nikon FE2. A steamboat chuffs its way along the Trent & Mersey Canal at Shardlow during a recent(ish) ‘Photography Friday’ jaunt.

An unusual sight on the UK’s canal network… this Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP) or ‘Higgins Boat’ was spotted at Beeston Marina in Nottinghamshire a couple of weeks ago.

Designed by Andrew Higgins more than 23,000 LCVPs were built between 1942 and 1945, used extensively in amphibious landings in World War II, they were capable of carrying a 36-man platoon, a Jeep and 12 men or 8,000lb of cargo.

Assuming the ‘PA26-25’ number is correct then this particular vessel was one of 33 assigned to the USS Samuel Chase (APA-26), an Arthur Middleton class attack transport ship launched in 1941.
