Single frame… Buckland Hollow

Last week I did a little exploring on one of the many old railway lines hereabouts…

This is the former Buckland Hollow branch line in Derbyshire, the branch, off the Midland Railway’s Ambergate to Pye Bridge line, served Ambergate Brickworks and Heage and Hartshay Collieries.

Passenger services on the Ambergate to Pye Bridge line ceased in 1947 and the line closed completely in December 1968 but I believe that some of the track was recovered for use at what is now the Midland Railway-Butterley.

This is my first roll of Kosmo Foto Mono 100 film and it certainly won’t be my last, it’s a beautiful film, grainy and high in contrast (but in a pleasantly traditional way) and very reasonably priced!

Another 20-year old image, taken on a borrowed Fuji GSW 690 III…

The Midland Railway-Butterley has featured on this blog many times before, whether the trains are running or not, there’s always something interesting to photograph.

Hopefully by now the boiler has been reunited with the rest of the locomotive!

Yet another image from the roll of Kodak Tri-X shot in a borrowed Nikon F…

This four-wheel, five plank railway wagon, was photographed at the Midland Railway Butterley (MR-B) in October last year. Not much is known about it other than it was built by Harrison & Camm Ltd of Rotherham and was acquired by the MR-B from Royal Naval Armament Depot (RNAD) Bedenham in Hampshire.

Middleton Top engine house (in the background here) houses a preserved steam engine that used to haul railway wagons up the 708-yard long, 1 in 8&frac12 gradient Middleton Incline on the Cromford & High Peak Railway (C&HPR) that linked the Cromford Canal at High Peak Junction and the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge. The incline closed in 1963, with the rest of the line following suit in 1967 and the trackbed now forms The High Peak Trail.

The railway wagon stands at the top of the incline and is VERY securely chained down to the track!

Square Saturday… Motor Rail diesel locomotives, October 2019

Yashica Mat 124G – 1/125s, f11 – Ilford FP4 Plus rated at ISO 100

Another shot from my first roll of film through the Yashica Mat 124G that I had repaired by Miles Whitehead of MW Camera Repairs last year.

These two Motor Rail diesel locomotives at the Midland Railway-Butterley have definitely seen better days since finishing work at ICI’s Smalldale Quarry in the Peak District.
