GWR 7800 class 4-6-0 7820 DINMORE MANOR
Fujifilm X-E1, Fujinon XC 50-230mm f4.5~6.7 OIS at 107mm, 1/100s, f8, ISO 500
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Five years ago it was the winter steam gala at the Great Central Railway.
GWR 7800 class 4-6-0 7820 DINMORE MANOR
Fujifilm X-E1, Fujinon XC 50-230mm f4.5~6.7 OIS at 113mm, 1/100s, f8, ISO 320
7820 DINMORE MANOR, a Great Western Railway (GWR) 7800 class 4-6-0 steam locomotive was visiting from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway and I managed a couple of trips from Loughborough Central to Leicester North and back in the warmth of steam-heated carriages…
Blackwell Mill, January 2012
Panasonic Lumix GF-1, Lumix G Vario OIS 14-45 f/3.5~5.6 at 28mm, 1/200s, f6.3, ISO 200
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Eight years ago it was this row of cottages in the Peak District.
The eight railway workers’ cottages at Blackwell Mill in Derbyshire were served by a tiny railway station, Blackwell Mill Halt, until March 1967 when it, and the whole railway line between Matlock and Chinley was closed.
The railway line on the left still links Buxton with the quarries at Tunstead and Peak Forest.

Yashica Mat 124G – 1/250s, f8 – Ilford FP4 Plus rated at ISO 100
This is from a test roll of Ilford FP4 Plus shot in a recently repaired Yashica Mat 124G. The scans seem a bit ‘flat’ but I’ve not yet looked at the negatives as they’re still in the post.
It’s a beautiful camera and thanks to Miles Whitehead of MW Camera Repairs I can start using it again!

20t Grain Hopper, October 2017
Nikon F3HP, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI-S, 1/60s, f5.6, Ilford 100 Professional
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Two years ago it was the various rail vehicles at the Fife Heritage Railway at Methil.
While many of the locomotives and items of rolling stock there are beautifully restored a few still await their turn in the queue like this grain hopper wagon…
I do love a bit of rust!
Southern Railway ‘Schools’ class 4-4-0 925 ‘CHELTENHAM’
Nikon D300, AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR at 45mm, 1/400s, f6.3, ISO 500
Today’s ‘Photography Friday’ involves a trip to the autumn steam gala at the Great Central Railway in Leicestershire.
The above image was captured at the same event seven years ago and shows Southern Railway ‘Schools’ class 4-4-0 locomotive No.925 ‘CHELTENHAM’ at Loughborough Central station, preparing to couple on to its first train of the day…
Coincidentally a classmate of ‘CHELTENHAM’ should be running today… No.926 ‘REPTON’ is visiting from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and I’m looking forward to having a ride behind it.
Go Fast
Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 18-135mm f3.5~5.6 R LM OIS WR at 36mm, 1/2s, f22, ISO 100
We (Joy, Rachel and myself) are off to Photomarathon Sheffield today, ‘One city. Six hours. Six photos. A one-day photography adventure for all ages. Looking at our city with curiosity, creativity and spontaneity.’
The above image, of a tram crossing Park Square Bridge, was number two of six last year, the topic being ‘Go fast’ in this case.
Taking just six photographs, one each of six topics, and strictly in order, is way out of my comfort zone but a fun day (and plenty of pub stops) beckons!
‘Devious’ Diesel
Nikon F-801s, AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 – 1/4000s, f8, – Paterson Acupan 800 rated at ISO 1600
A couple of images from a sheet of negatives that turned up while I was looking for something else yesterday…
For a while in the late 1990s Paterson Photographic sold their own brand of film with both ISO 200 and 800 emulsions being available.
Pushing the ISO 800 film one stop really accentuated the grain but I love the effect on these images, taken at my local heritage railway, the Midland Railway-Butterley.
‘Devious’ Diesel is a character in the Thomas the Tank Engine books (I’ve probably still got my childhood copy of ‘Duck and the Diesel Engine’ squirrelled away somewhere…) and the fibreglass face is being worn here by British Railways class 08 diesel shunter 08590 (built in 1959 at Crewe).
The other diesel loco in these images is probably Andrew Barclay Sons & Co Ltd 0-4-0DM No.2 (works no.416 of 1957) that was preserved at Butterley after it was withdrawn from use at Castle Donington Power Station.

Taking on water, Sheffield Park, June 2017
Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 18-135mm f3.5~5.6 R LM OIS WR at 21mm, 1/320s, f8, ISO 400
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Two years ago I was travelling on the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex on an incredibly hot day!
Southern Railway (SR) Q class 0-6-0 locomotive 30541 (built 1939, Eastleigh) was in charge of passenger trains and the above image shows it taking a drink from an 1881 vintage water crane at Sheffield Park station.
London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) class A1X 0-6-0T No.672 ‘FENCHURCH’ (built 1872, Brighton) was on display at the south end of the station and I spotted this record of its mileage painted inside the cab.
1,158,420 miles
Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 18-135mm f3.5~5.6 R LM OIS WR at 39mm, 1/75s, f8, ISO 400
1,158,420 miles seems like a huge figure but it’s only an average of just over 8,300 per year!
Danger de Mort
