Two years ago it was this juxtaposition of signs that made me chuckle…
Even the longest established businesses need to relocate sometimes! 😁
Derby Cathedral, November 2015
Fujifilm X-E1, Fujinon XF 27mm f2.8, 1/3500s, f2.8, ISO 800
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Four years ago it was the city of Derby…
I was trying out the Fujinon XF 27mm f2.8 lens for the first time, I didn’t get on with it… Optically the lens was flawless, I just didn’t care for the lack of an aperture ring, something I was used to with my other X-series lenses.
I’m not quite sure what was going on with my camera settings that day… ‘1/3500s, f2.8, ISO 800’ What was I thinking?
Pen Hill, Yorkshire Dales, November 2004
Nikon D100, Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4 AF-D, 1/250s, f8, ISO 200
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Fifteen years ago it was the landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales…
For a number of years we rented a cottage in the beautiful market town of Leyburn for a week in November… relaxation, long walks and lots of local beer tended to be the order of the day, with a little photography thrown in.
Pen Hill is roughly five miles south west of Leyburn and at 1,814ft high it is a prominent landmark in the area.
20t Grain Hopper, October 2017
Nikon F3HP, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI-S, 1/60s, f5.6, Ilford 100 Professional
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Two years ago it was the various rail vehicles at the Fife Heritage Railway at Methil.
While many of the locomotives and items of rolling stock there are beautifully restored a few still await their turn in the queue like this grain hopper wagon…
I do love a bit of rust!
Le Marinier Tirant sa Barque
Fujifilm X-T10, Fujinon XF 18-55mm f2.8~4 R LM OIS at 18mm, 1/60s, f10, ISO 1250
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Four years ago it was this fantastic sculpture on the bank of the Loire River at Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire in central France.
Entitled ‘Le Marinier Tirant sa Barque’ (The Bargee Pulling his Boat) the sculpture was created by Jean-Jacques Bourgeois based on an idea by Marcel Van Nieuwenberg.
The bridge in the background crosses both the Loire and the border between the Nièvre and Cher départements.
Gateway, Coniston, September 2018
Nikon F3HP, Nikkor 35mm f/2 AI-S – 1/60s, f5.6, – Kentmere 400 rated at ISO 320
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Last year I was accompanying a pal of mine (Hi Mark!) on his annual pilgrimage from Derbyshire to the Lake District to climb a hill in memory of his father. I didn’t join him on his climb up the 2,634 feet high Old Man of Coniston but did have a gentle stroll down the old Furness Railway line towards Torver and this shot was taken just before I took a detour off the path for a pint in The Sun Inn.
Today we’re off to the Lakes again, Mark’s got his Kendal Mint Cake and I’ve got my camera…

Flaked out dog, Sheringham
Fujifilm X20, Fujinon Super EBC 7.1-28.4mm f2~2.8 at 24mm, 1/550s, f8, ISO 100
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Five years ago it was this very bored-looking dog at Sheringham, waiting for its ‘humans’ to get on with the walk they’d promised him…
The X20 was my first Fujifilm camera and was directly responsible for my entry into the X mirrorless system in 2015 (with the X-E1). It’s also partially to blame for my friend Rachel’s interest in photography… she borrowed it during our holiday to Scotland in October 2017 and hasn’t looked back!
It’s a bit wild out there! Cromer, September 2015
Fujifilm X-T10, Fujinon XF 18-55mm f2.8~4 R LM OIS at 52mm, 1/320s, f8, ISO 200
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Four years ago it was the Pier and Promenade at Cromer in Norfolk… Mid-storm!
This was taken during our last stay in a friend’s static caravan on the cliffs at East Runton, less than a mile and a half down the coast from Cromer.

Nikon D300, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM at 95mm, 1/250s, f2.8, ISO 1600
What was I photographing on this day in previous years?
Ten years ago it was local rock band Fat Stan, strutting their stuff in the Crossed Pistons Saloon at the Rock and Blues Custom Show in Derbyshire.
I don’t think I’ve ever had such good access to a stage as I did here, not only that but I’d got two massive bikers keeping a watchful eye on my gear!
