A few days ago a conversation with friends turned to ‘self-care’ and the sort of things we did that helped our mental health… Quite simply the above image sums up the thing I do most often… take a stroll in woodland with a camera and some black & white film.

Works every time.

After yesterday’s post on a film failure I thought I’d post something more positive today… the first image from my first roll of Ilford Ortho Plus.

Ilford say this film is ideally suited to landscape photography and I can’t really argue with that recommendation…

An image from my first roll of Lomography Potsdam black & white film… I always try to buy something whenever I come across a camera shop on my travels and this particular roll came from Bass & Bligh in Harrogate.

Results from the second roll of Fuji Provia RDP II 100 (that expired in 1998) aren’t as good as from the first but they’re still much better than I was expecting!

An image from Expired Film Day 2022.

A few months ago a pal (Hi Simon!) gave me a quantity of Fuji Provia RDP II 100 and Velvia RVP 50 slide film that had all expired in 1997 or 1998. A bit of research suggested exposing it at box speed and cross my fingers for reasonable results.

The original slides have a colour cast and are a little underexposed but nothing a little tweak in Lightroom couldn’t sort out!

An image from a recent ‘Photography Friday’ jaunt with my regular partner-in-crime, Rachel to Derby Arboretum, Britain’s first public park.

Joseph Strutt commissioned and donated the park for the benefit of citizens of Derby in 1840. The intention was a botanical tree garden for instruction as well as leisure. Sadly it was neglected for many years and even now is a little known and somewhat unappreciated spot in the city…
