What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Five years ago it was the picturesque coastal village of Craster in Northumberland during a gap between Covid lockdowns…

The concrete construction at the end of the right hand breakwater is the remains of tower that supported an overhead cable system that used to transfer stone from a quarry west of the village to ships in the harbour.

The ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle lie to the north of Craster and date from the 14th century.

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

Eleven years ago it was the Light Clock at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Designed and installed by world-renowned clockmakers, Smiths of Derby, the clock represents “The Lady with the Lamp”, Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing who was brought up in Derbyshire and corresponded with Dr William Ogle of Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in 1860 regarding the rebuilding of the hospital.

What was I photographing on this day in previous years?

15 years ago it was the faded grandeur of Sutton Scarsdale Hall near Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

Dating from the 1720s the Grade 1 Listed structure has been derelict since the 1920s and was initially preserved in 1946 by Sir Osbert Sitwell of nearby Renishaw Hall but is now in the care of English Heritage.

Last time I visited the hall, the interior was closed to visitors but I understand it has now reopened.

15 years ago it was Another Place by Antony Gormley at Crosby beach on Merseyside.

I remember being somewhat underwhelmed by the sculptures and quickly turned my attention to the passing ships.

The MS Norbay is a roll-on/roll-off passenger (ROPAX) vessel built by Van Der Giessen-de Noord N.V. in the Netherlands in 1994 and was, at the time of the photo, employed on P&O Ferries Liverpool – Dublin route.
